Bay Street Boys
In Toronto, the stockbrokers and traders in the finance world are referred to as "Bay Street Boys," named after the city's financial centre converging on Bay Street. In the glory days of the 1980s, these boys were the epitome of the white alpha male as characterized in popular culture - "Wall Street" and "American Psycho" come to mind. Now, several years after the financial meltdown in 2008, banks and corporations have cut back and legend of the Bay Street Boy may be disappearing. Their swagger and attitude, however, endure.
Even as casual Fridays are encroaching upon the most conservative workplaces, many men continue to choose to wear a well-fitted suit to indicate to the world they are successful and are financially stable, thus making them attractive as potential mates.
This series explores this archetype of masculinity and offers a glimpse into how some men construct their identity.
